One of the key functions of makeup is to make us better or at least appropriate but certainly not older! However even with the millions of makeup tutorials available it is easy to make mistakes and actually make yourself look older.
We need to bear in mind that your makeup style should evolve based on your changing skin as you age. Products and techniques you used in your university days may not work as you get to 20, 30 and beyond.
To prevent this from happening here is a list of the common mistakes women of all ages make which make them look much older. So keep reading to find out if you’re committing any of these ageing mistakes and what you can do to correct them.
1. Wrong application of blush
One of the first things I learnt was that blush was supposed to be applied onto the apples of my cheeks for a youthful glow. I have since learnt that this is not the case, because applying blush creates an unnatural flush on your face accentuating wrinkles. Instead, sweep your blush along the top of your cheekbone which would naturally flush to create a natural look.
Another common mistake made with blush is using too much, applying it too low, or picking the wrong shade. Depending on your skin tone and undertone avoid blush colours that look muddy or unnatural instead use colours that match the natural shades your skin takes when it is flushed. Use lighter tones or opt for creams formulas instead of powder blushes to avoid a flaky look.
2.Application of thick black eyeliner
Eyeliner can make you look mysterious and sexy, but getting it wrong can make you look like you wandered in from the wrong decade. Eyeliner on your top lid can open up your eyes making them look larger. Use too much on you upper your eyes look heavy. To keep eyes looking open and bright apply your eyeliner thinner lines and use dark brown or brown instead of black.
Another mistake made is using heavy liner on the bottom lid is. This is aging it makes your eyes look smaller and accentuates the fine lines around the eyes dragging your whole face down. To look youthful your eyes should appear brighter by keeping the bottom lash liner light and using a brown liner instead of a black pencil. You can also apply a white or cream liner (depending on your skin tone) on your waterline to open up your eyes even more.
3. Choosing the wrong colour and application of concealer
Choosing the correct under-eye concealer is the difference between visible fine lines and wrinkles or having them vanish! Use the wrong texture of concealer or the wrong colour and all your ‘’problem issues ‘’ become more visible. For under-eye choose a light-weight textured concealer close to your skin tone. Too heavy, it overwhelms the thinner skin of your under eye and too light and it looks like swelling under your eyes. For blemishes, you need a thicker heavier concealer. Here the concealer needs to match your skin tone almost exactly otherwise you are accentuating more than you are concealing.
Another is applying too much concealer which happens in our attempt to hide every single blemish on our skin. This highlights every line and wrinkle looks and gives the skin a mask-like unnatural look which ageing. So use thinner concealers with luminous particles which look more natural.
5.Wrong foundation everything
Foundation is the base of your makeup get any aspect wrong and you look like the old witch in Disney fairy-tale. Like every product, your foundation needs will likely change as you age and it is better to wear no foundation than to get it wrong.
No foundation and your skin tone are uneven too much and it settles into fine lines and wrinkles. Choosing the wrong type of foundation is one of the most common makeup mistakes and there are so many formulas to choose from. You need to know which ones will give you the most youthful appearance and which ones will add years to your face so choose based on your skin type and undertones. For a natural look which looks better as you get older a sheer to medium coverage is better to go for a BB cream or a tinted moisturizer. Alternatively, if you need to cover imperfections then reach for a medium to full coverage foundation. Powders tend to make you look older because the skin gets drier as we age so if you are trying to look younger avoid powder or mineral-based formulas.
4. Thinning undefined eyebrows
Our eyebrows become sparser as we get older so having thin brows makes you look much older. They also tend to drop slightly as you age so the youthful-looking brow is thick full and arched. Thankfully there are multiple methods available to make your brows look thicker as well as natural. To fill your brows in using a brow shade slighter lighter than your natural hair colour to give you fuller-looking brows. This can be done using brow pencils, brow gels or micro-blading depending on your commitment level.
Try to make your brows as natural looking as possible, if they are too sharp and severe it also adds to ageing you. So stick with pencils or powders which can easily be softened so practice!

I always thought having larger eyebrows made me look weird but may need to re-evaluate this! Foundation took me years to find the right one! Didn’t think about under tones!
