Learn about my dermaplaning experience in Abuja , the benefits and what it did to my face hair

DERMAPLANING

As I looked through my explore page on Instagram I came across this video. Colour me intrigued and  I thought okay that looks super effective. Over the next few weeks, I saw more videos with before and after pictures and the results looked quite extraordinary. So I decided to investigate and do my research on if it would be a good procedure for me. In the next few paragraphs, I will explain what dermaplaning is, the benefits, my results and why I chose it over other methods of exfoliation and if it was worth it.

What is dermaplaning?

Exfoliation is a process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Dermaplaning is a type of manual exfoliation where the doctor or aesthetician scrapes off dead skin cells and hairs from your skin using a scaple. Regular exfoliation can help keep your pores unclogged and reduce the number of breakouts, to learn more click here.

Why I chose Dermaplaning

I exfoliate my skin regularly using AHAs or BHAs. However, benefit dermaplaning has over other exfoliating methods is the removal of facial hair. I don’t know about you, but I have a light scattering of fine hairs across my face. These hairs prevent my makeup from applying smoothly and dermaplaning takes care of that.

Another reason I chose to dermaplaning is that there is no downtime. Apart from having to wear sunscreen (which you should do anyway!) you are good to go. Your skin doesn’t flake and you can go about your normal daily business unlike other types of exfoliation.

The third reason is that dermaplaning reduces the appearance of acne scars.  I have recently had a series of breaks outs and due to my inability to leave my face alone have significant scarring and pigmentation. It also improves the texture of your skin, making it appear smoother.

Who is dermaplaning for?

Like most procedures, it is not for everyone. Dermaplaning is not for you if you have thick, dark facial hair or if you have overactive oily acne-prone skin.

How often you get it done?

Like other exfoliating treatments, dermaplaning removes the top layer of your skin. This means that newer more sensitive skin has been exposed and your skin needs to heal before any new treatment. Otherwise, you risk over exfoliating your skin you can read about the consequences here.

My experience

Identifying a spa

I am based in Abuja and we don’t have as many options as in Lagos,so I looked online. Based on the information available chose to try Flawless skin by Abby Med Spa.

Booking and scheduling

The booking process was quite easy, I used the number listed on the website, got the price and scheduled the procedure.  The receptionist was very polite and knowledgeable and tried to upsell some additional services related to the procedure. When I say upsell, I don’t mean it negatively it was done properly and if I had the time I would have included those services.

My appointment

The spa is located in one of the smaller malls and is easy to locate. Once I arrived I have welcomed my appointment confirmed and within 5 mins I was in the treatment room.

The process started with cleansing my skin to remove my makeup and a mask to soften my skin. The process starting from my forehead and the aesthetician used a surgical blade to gently scrape off the dead skin cells and hair. The whole process from start to finish lasted about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Results

The process itself is not painful but my skin felt a bit raw afterwards. So my skin stung a little when the products were applied but my skin looked great. All the fine hairs were gone, my scars reduced significantly and the texture of my skin was more refined. The aesthetician told me to expect some light peeling of my skin for the next 2-3 days.

Recovery

Like I mentioned there is no downtime for this procedure I was able to go about my normal business immediately. My skin felt tender 2-3 days afterwards but did not affect my makeup or skincare application. One thing to remember is that immediately after your dermaplaning treatment, your skin is highly sensitive to sun exposure. So you must wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF an 30 or higher .

Price: It was a pricy when compared to the prices I saw online in other countries

Location: Flawless Skin By Abby Med Spa is in Wuse 2 which is centrally located and easy to find. Inside the spa is well decorated and quiet so despite being in a mall.

Staff: I received a call the day before my appointment to remind me of the time of my appointment. The aesthetician extremely knowledgeable who let me know what she was doing every step of the way.

Recommendations

Would I do this again, possibly? However, considering the price I would prefer a chemical peel which will give me more bang for my buck. The aesthetician recommended a TCA peel which I am likely to try the next time I visit. However, if you are new to exfoliating it is a great entry point. It is also a good procedure to try out if you need instant results with absolutely no downtime.
